Esperanza Spalding Makes History with Best New Artist Win

Esperanza Spalding made history last night during the 53rd annual Grammy Awards with her win for Best New Artist. The 26-year old bassist bested fellow nominees Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence + the Machine, and Mumford & Sons to become the first-ever jazz musician to win the Best New Artist category.

Watch her backstage interview below.

Powerhouse female vocalists Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Florence Welch and gospel singer Yolanda Adams kicked off the annual awards show with a nearly 15-minute tribute to one of music’s legendary female singers Aretha Franklin. Watch part of it here.

We’ve got to also pay R-E-S-P-E-C-T to Lady Antebellum, who dominated the show with five wins including Song and Record of the Year. Congrats to Lady A’s lovely singer Hillary Scott.
